What to examine

BHITB and the cited 1920 discussion refer to Tabula X. The reproduction examined in Remembering YAH visibly reads Tabula XII. Keep those sheet references distinct.

Historical Africa sheet with the heading Africae Tabula XII and box A locating the inland label
Sanuto atlas tradition, 1588. Visible sheet: AFRICAE TABVLA XII. Reproduction via BHITB; study box from Remembering YAH.
Enlargement of the inland map region containing the Latin label IVDEORVM TERRA
Box A enlarged: IVDEORVM TERRA. Keep the visible label separate from conclusions about modern populations.

A short label transcription

IVDEORVM TERRA

Transcribed from the reproduced close-up displayed above. The Latin lettering uses V where a modern transcription may use U. The visible full-sheet heading reads AFRICAE TABVLA XII. This does not resolve the different Tabula X reference in the research trail.

Keep three records together: the sheet heading, the enlarged label and the separate source citation. The label is visible evidence; a conclusion about the identity of a modern population requires additional evidence.

Make your own source record

  1. Identify the creator, title, edition and date from the source itself.
  2. Record the exact page or map sheet. Read the surrounding passage or full geographical setting.
  3. Separate the wording visible in the document from the interpretation you draw from it.
  4. Keep unresolved readings and conflicting dates in your notes so the comparison can be revisited.
